Preserving Critically Endangered Game Birds Before They Are Lost Forever
A Breed on the Brink
Some poultry are not simply farm animals—they are living relics of human and natural history. Breeds such as the Aseel represent ancient galliform lineages that predate modern commercial poultry by centuries. According to The Livestock Conservancy, these birds are classified as Critically Endangered, meaning their population numbers are so low that extinction is a real and imminent risk.
In An Aseel Odyssey, the story of this breed is not told as nostalgia, but as warning. Once revered for their intelligence, resilience, and genetic distinctiveness, Aseel and similar game birds now exist in fragmented pockets, often misunderstood, misused, or quietly disappearing. When a breed reaches this level of endangerment, every individual bird matters. Each loss represents an irreplaceable erosion of genetic diversity, history, and biological resilience.
Devotion Conservancy was founded in response to this urgency—to ensure that critically endangered game birds are not lost simply because their care is complex, their history misunderstood, or their survival inconvenient.

Why These Birds Need Specialized Protection
Many critically endangered game birds arrive at Devotion Conservancy through high-risk pathways, including abandonment, neglect, and confiscation from illegal activities such as underground gamefighting operations. These birds cannot be absorbed into backyard flocks or standard poultry rescues.
Due to their genetics, temperament, and welfare needs, endangered game birds often require:
-
Single housing to prevent injury, stress, or aggression
-
Secure, species-appropriate enclosures
-
Careful behavioral rehabilitation
-
Strict biosecurity to protect rare bloodlines
Single housing alone dramatically increases costs—each bird requires its own enclosure, space, feeding, and monitoring. Ethical care for these birds is fundamentally different from conventional poultry keeping.
